Computer Free Capstone
Computer-Free Capstone
This assignment really got me thinking and brainstorming. For my capstone idea “Livin Easy”, it would not be a challenge for us to start computer-free. Instead of building a website for students to search for housing, I could take on the computer-free capstone approach by choosing a popular, active spot on campus to spread the word about our project. In order to get students really excited we would set up a table in a popular spot in the Union and relay this information to students through word-of-mouth and from our visuals that we design. Since we can’t have any technology to draw the students towards our stand, I would bake an Italian dessert in order to bring people over to our table. Without using a computer or any technology whatsoever, we would draw/design a visual representation of what we are envisioning for our company and hang that poster right above our stand. Another visual we could have to replace the technology in our project would be to show pictures of available apartments and then a complete list of the available apartments/ houses in the Orono. After we spread the word through word of mouth we would create a physical book where students could post a sublet or view apartments/houses available.
Evan and I would be the two people running the stand but it would also be helpful to see if local landlords would be interested in coming to our stand and talking to some of the students. I think that would be an extremely powerful tool because it would connect students to landlords and build that relationship.
After pitching our idea to students we would give them a short survey or just ask them a few questions on our idea for feedback. I think feedback is a very powerful tool that doesn’t rely on technology.
This alternative computer-free version of my project would be slightly challenging but if I provide enough visual posters, photographs and facts at my stand in the Union, I think our idea would appeal to students and they would be interested in it. This alternative version to our project still speaks to the same issues that interest me in my original project. The only real difference between the alternative computer-free project vs. my original website idea is the way it is reaching the audience. For the computer-free project it would be reaching the audience/ students through our stand in the Union that would be all visuals and word of mouth. For our original idea, students would be able to find out all of this information on their own on our website.
