Project Proposal
There were 2 ideas/proposals that my group and I brainstormed that I want to work with in the future. The first project was a project directed towards the entire Umaine Community, which includes students, teachers and faculty. Throughout my time spent at Umaine, I realized that parking was a large issue throughout the campus. Everyday when I go to find a parking spot before my class, I always end up circling around the campus in search of a parking spot. This is frustrating and time consuming and an excessive amount of cars on campus is unnecessary. In order to fix this problem, I want to develop a project that will benefit the Umaine community by limiting the amount of cars, confusion and frustration when parking. The core idea I have for this project would be to have some sort of bike or manual machine that students could drive around campus and volunteer to run themselves. Students could volunteer for free in order to benefit the community and keep fewer cars on campus in order for transportation to be made easier. As far as a feedback system, I would want to create and online website or blog for this project that allows students, teachers and staff to comment and reflect on how they like the new form of transportation around campus. New Media would be involved when I ask for feedback on an online website that I create or a blog. I could also use New Media by showing people the amount of cars on campus and how many people have problems looking for parking spots everyday. This project would be a good idea because it benefits students, teachers, staff and the overall Umaine community. I would possibly work with the engineering department in order to create another way of transportation that could drive or peddle people around campus. The only difficult part of this project would be finding a different way of transportation to bring students around campus. It would also be difficult to urge students not to drive to school, because most people enjoy having their own car. In order for this project to work I’d have to show students that this project would be beneficial for the community, it would be enviornmentally friendly and it would save people time in the morning.
My second proposal was the idea of having a Spring Festival on the Umaine Mall. Since I came to Umaine last year, I noticed that there weren’t enough fun on-campus events that allow students to interact with each other and different music. By having a Spring Festival on the campus students and well as teachers and the rest of the Umaine faculty would be able to experience live music’s throughout the day. To get feedback on this idea I could make a facebook page or blog that allows students to comment and post about what bands or artists they want to here. To allow the students to get more involved, student’s who are in bands could sign up to play at some point in the festival. Along with music there could also be people who sell baked good or anything else that they have made that they want to share or sell on the mall. New media could be used when getting feedback about the concert via twitter, facebook page or blog. I think the only problem with this idea would be getting approval to have a concert and tents on the mall throughout the day, otherwise I think it would be fun educational day that allows students to interact with each other and meet more people as well.
