Enhanced Capstone Proposal

Enhanced Capstone Proposal

Abstract- Design and implement a housing website for college students in Orono, Maine

Why- There is no housing website for UMaine students that is well designed and that has helpful features. Orono desperately needs a housing website to solve a problem that many students face: searching for a place to live. By creating this housing website we will fix that problem by designing a simple, yet powerful website for students.

Where- This is a problem that many UMaine students face so the website would start out in Orono, Maine.

What-

  • My purpose is to create a simple, well-designed website that esesentailly makes students lives easier when they go to search for housing.
  • The outcome of this website would be that students will have an easier time finding housing, they will be less stressed and they will build a relationship with their landlord.

When- I’m still in the beginning stages of planning out my project. I’m taking a coding class to get a background with coding because I am unfamiliar. I’ve put together a timeline for myself and set up goals and expectations.

Timeline-

Friday, September 19th– Finalize idea for the app

Monday, September 29th– Start coding class

Monday, October 6th– Talk to realtors in the Orono area

Monday, October 13th– Make posters/ flyers

Monday, October 27th– Make surveys & set up stand in Union

November 3rd– Hire a coder

November 10th– Get feedback from surveys/ students

Who- I plan on working with my fellow New Media classmate, Evan Deschenes

How- I plan on accomplishing this app by designing and website layout and then hiring a computer programmer to code the app for me. I definitely plan on setting up a table at the Union and making a survey for students to fill out and respond to. I also plan on getting the word out by posting on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram about my project idea. I might even take pictures of the app layout and post them around the school to get the word out.

Costs: $500 to code the app
