Project Report 2

Initial Perspective

When I think about the food issues on campus, it really bothers me that the university doesn’t care enough about the quality of the food being served to students. The food is low quality and isn’t the healthiest food. In response to the horrible food situation on campus, I think a poll of questions to give to students will be a good way to get feedback and change the food system. There are a lot of things that motivated me to get interested in the food issues on campus. First of all, my mom is a food stylist so food has always been important to my mom and the rest of my family. Another reason I am interested in food is because there so much locally grown food in the state of Maine and I think that students should be able to experience that food on campus.

This video discusses the politics of food. Tara Brown has collaborated with her peers on a series of projects such as launching a campus community garden, organizing a symposium on the politics of food, and advocating for sustainable food on college campuses.
Vegatarian students from BU seek to find local, fresh product. They hope to support local farmers and buy food that is healthy and enjoyable. These students prepare vegatarian meals that are easy and healthy!

Revised Position

Food is apart of our everyday lives and I strongly believe in the saying “you are what you eat”.  Food determines your health, your status and your overall happiness. Although sometimes eating is a social thing when I go out to dinner with people or have my cousins over my house, I think eating food is more pleasurable for me than a social thing. Good food is what puts me in a good mood. I think that the UMaine campus doesn’t recognize or care about the quality of food they serve to their students and that is a large issue. It really excites me that our 200 class has taken on this project in order to improve the food on campus because food is evident in our everyday lives and will never stop being important.

Project Proposal

For this project I worked on putting together a poll for students which I think it a really effective way to get student feedback and use that feedback to improve the food system. Another great idea I have for this project idea is to organize and on campus local food market that students can walk to on campus once a week. At the market there will be local, Maine food sold that is very affordable so students can easy healthy and at a low cost. Another great idea is having on campus events with local foods sold for cheap! Any way to promote healthy local foods on the UMaine campus is a good idea. I would like to see the UforMe project get feedback from on-campus students, off-campus students and the rest of the Umaine faculty and staff. I really want to see this project continue to expand and it would be nice to have the entire campus get involved in this project, however that might be unrealistic. By next year, it would be awesome if the next NMD 200 class would take over this project and expand upon it.
