Under The Tuscan Sun

This weekend was absolutely amazing. My study abroad program (API) provides various excursions throughout the semester throughout Italy. This past weekend API brought us to the beautiful region of Tuscany. We left Rome early Friday morning and arrived in the small town of Montepulciano four hours later. Montepulicano was an absolutely beautiful town. I knew they were famous for their wine but I didn’t realize how spectacular the views would be. IMG_5865

We were first taken on a guided tour of the historical wine cellars, followed by a wine tasting and food sampling of local products from the town. The wine tour explained how wine is aged and how it is best tasted. The grapes are grown in vineyards surrounding the town, and then taken to a cellar where the wine is made. We sampled 4 different wines that were all unique in their own way. The wine tasting and food samples were easily my favorite part of Tuscany.

The next day we took a short bus ride to the noble town of Cortona. Cortona is where they shot the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun”. It is famous for their majestic stonewalls, wine, oil olive and spectacular views. We had a guided tour around the city of Cortona and learned about the cities ancient history. After our tour around Cortona we ended our day at the Fonteverde Resort and Spa where we swam in the mineral-rich thermal spring waters. The thermal baths were extremely warm restorative pools that cleanse your body. Bathing in thermal baths has a peeling effect on your skin, which regenerates and moisturizes it, making your skin feel cleansed. It felt so good to end the day in pure relaxation and bliss. Overall it was an amazing weekend filled with the best wine, spectacular views, a lot of history and good friends. I definitely recommend going to Tuscany if you want to stay away from tourists, try local products and go on tours.
